Prior to this module, I regarded social enterprises as essentially non-profit organisations that pursued community impact without seeking to generate profit. I treated financial return and social good as separate objectives belonging to different types of business. That assumption has been dismantled entirely. What I had not recognised was that this binary was itself a mental model inherited from conventional business education — one that made it impossible to see how value creation and social mission could be structurally integrated rather than traded off against each other. Social enterprise is not a softer version of business. It is a more demanding one, because it must sustain a commercial model and a social mission at the same time.

At the sector level, the World Economic Forum and Schwab Foundation estimate the global social enterprise economy at roughly $2 trillion, making it larger than the global fashion industry and nearly twice the size of global advertising (Schwabfound, 2026; McKinsey & Company, 2025; Warc.com, 2024). Most people still associate social enterprise with charity. The reality is that it operates at a scale that dwarfs industries everyone takes seriously. That perception gap is itself a failure of understanding about where value creation is actually happening. At the structural level, a UK study found that 66% of social enterprises survived at least five years, versus 47% of businesses overall (Ní Ógáin, n.d.). A separate survey showed 47% of social enterprises grew turnover in the prior twelve months, against 34% of SMEs (Social Enterprise UK, 2017: p.8). Purpose-driven models are not weaker. They are more durable, anchored in community trust and reinvestment logic rather than short-term extraction.
