Expected Learning Outcomes: Skills Development

• Information Literacy

While conducting the final report, I came across very biased and unofficial websites. What I did to avoid this mistake was to research the writer of an article further and make sure the information written was relevant in fit in. I developed information literacy by carefully selecting which websites and articles are informative enough to be published in the final report. I also made sure to use newer sources as technology has developed recently and outdated sources relating to marketing would not be efficient. I effectively used knowledge previously gained to choose the correct sources to make my work sound more informative.

• Critical Thinking and Problem Solving

Critical Thinking and Problem Solving are skills which I managed to use while conducting the report as they are very important for evaluating what is right and what is wrong. I demonstrated these skills when deciding whether to use Primary Qualitative or Primary Quantitative research. As well as that, they were important for evaluating whether the research design was going to be exploratory, descriptive or causal. Problem solving was very important particularly for stage 2 of the research problem. This skill was needed in order to find out which is the most appropriate data analysis technique to be used. As well as that I demonstrated good critical thinking skills when I carefully evaluated and ensure that the information I found was reliable and valid in secondary research. “Critical Thinking is better for decision making and is also key for career success”. (“The Importance Of Critical Thinking,” 2020) Writing the report helped me to develop my critical thinking skills as many decisions had to be made and by evaluating each problem and finding a solution to it with having an appropriate source to back it up, I found it useful to write relevant information.

• Written and Oral Communication

I successfully developed written and oral communication skills while conducting the research group report by communicating information needed. I made sure to take into consideration that the reader understands everything clearly. As written communication is very important, particularly in business situations it is key to effectively develop written communication skills (“Written Communication - advantage, type, benefits, disadvantages, The communication process,” n.d.) With that in mind, our group explained terms that would be unfamiliar to non-business readers to make sure that they really understand what we are trying to say.

As well as that, by developing and researching appropriate sources and markets we wrote up our final report and presented a complete market research project. It took a lot of effort to come to the final stage of the report as it required a lot of formalities and appropriate reseacrh methods. We made sure we communicated each information gathered appropriately by citing and referencing and also looking out for biased websites. We are aware that a report should contain only relevant information regarding our market research and main objective. These steps helped me to develop my communication skills and I hope to use them in further reports.

• Ethical Decision-Making

I read the DCU Business School Research Ethics Guidelines to become more familiar with what it involved. I was then able to develop skills relating to ethical decision-making as I learned to respect the rights of both myself (researcher) and the audience being researched. I made sure I complied with all ethics rules while conducting the research. I learned that ethics is very important particularly in business as it is needed to satisfy basic human needs. “When we are being fair, honest and ethical we serve a purpose of having an excellent business.” (“Importance of Ethics,” n.d.) I also learned that ethics creates a sense of credibility among employees and customers. Having this in mind, I learned how to comply with the ethics guidelines throughout the duration of the project. We included all types of genders, ethical background and age. As ethics is very important, ethical decision-making was an aspect that was carefully undertaken to make sure that we successfully completed the final report.

• Collaboration

A main skill which I found very important is collaboration. I gained this skill in previous group work assignments and I was successfully able to interpret it into this assignment. I worked together with my team in order to complete the project on time and make sure we have everything we need. Our main objective was to spread out work evenly and make sure we were giving our best in order to complete the project. We had zoom meetings frequently and talked about each step of the process. Due to our problem solving skills, we were able to collaborate in an excellent manner by solving problems like missing information needed for the report. We took each heading step by step and collaborated to come up with effective ideas to add a flow to the report and make sure we have relevant information and sources in. In conclusion, I feel like we all collaborated in an excellent way and I think we completed a very good project due to this important skill that we all managed to have.
